ONKARESHWAR JYOTRILINGA TEMPLE
The fourth Jyotirlinga among Lord Shiva’s twelve Jyotirlingas is Omkareshwar Temple. The sacred syllable “Om” was first uttered by Brahma, the Creator, and the chanting of the Vedas begins with “Om.” The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga represents the manifestation of Lord Shiva in the form of “Om,” symbolizing His divine presence. Jyotirlingas are places where Lord Shiva is believed to have manifested Himself and is enshrined in the form of radiant light. It is said that the mere sight of the sacred Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga absolves all sins.
The significance of Omkareshwar is highlighted in ancient texts such as the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana. Omkareshwar is home to 68 sacred pilgrimage spots, hosts 33 crore deities, and features 108 powerful Shivlingas in divine forms. The expansive and majestic Narmada River, which spans 84 yojanas, further enhances the sanctity of this holy site.
The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is located 77 kilometers from Indore, a major city in Madhya Pradesh. It is the only Jyotirlinga situated on the northern bank of the Narmada River. According to legend, Lord Shiva rests here after His daily journey through the three worlds. Therefore, a special arrangement is made every evening for Lord Shiva’s rest, accompanied by unique rituals and an exclusive Shayan Aarti (resting ceremony), allowing devotees to witness this divine spectacle.
