Impressed by the divine energy of the place, Lord Shiva manifested here as the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, while Goddess Parvati became Bhramaramba, making this temple a unique shrine of both Jyotirlinga and Shakti Peetha together.

Another legend narrates that Chandravati, a princess, discovered a self-manifested Shiva Linga in the area. She worshipped it daily with jasmine (Mallika) flowers, leading to the deity being named Mallikarjuna.
