Legend states that Somraj (the Moon God) first built the temple in gold, later reconstructed by Ravana in silver, Lord Krishna in wood, and Bhimdev in stone. Throughout history, the temple attracted invaders due to its immense wealth. Mahmud of Ghazni plundered and destroyed it in 1024 AD, followed by successive attacks from Alauddin Khilji, Zafar Khan, and Aurangzeb. Despite multiple demolitions, the unwavering faith of devotees led to its reconstruction, with the present-day structure being rebuilt in 1951 under the guidance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The Somnath Temple showcases the brilliance of Chalukyan-style architecture, featuring intricate carvings, grand shikhars (spires), and a majestic Sabha Mandap (assembly hall).
